You know, I think God is most pleased with our worship when we come to Him because of who He is, and not because of what He has done. Now don’t get me wrong, I do believe we are to worship Him for His death, resurrection, and retrun; however, sometimes I think when we praise Him for what He has done, we tend to focus the worship on ourselves. We worship Him because of changing US, for loving US, for rescuing US, for choosing US. How often do we worship Him on Sunday mornings because it was a good message, and the worship songs made us happy, and we felt good, and all was well with the world? Even though I believe we are called to praise Him because of what He has done and has yet to do, I think we sometimes we miss something even bigger.

How often is it we worship Him because He is God? We tend to worship Him when we feel good, but that is not what worship is about. Worship is about giving your everything to God because He is God. It is about looking past what you feel, and the struggles you are facing, and worshiping Him because He is worth it. We cannot understand God, we cannot understand the creation of the world, we cannot understand the death of Christ, we cannot understand the resurrection, and we cannot understand the return. Our knowledge is nowhere near God’s knowledge. But even though we cannot understand why we cannot understand, we are to still worship Him for being God. We are to look past our feelings, our understandings, and our trials to just worship Him for Him.

When is the last time you just worshiped God for being God, and did not even think about yourself? I think we tend to forget this idea of worship.

“It comforts me to think that if we are created beings, the thing that created us would have to be greater than us, so much greater, in fact, that we would not be able to understand it. It would have to be greater than the facts of our reality, and so it would seem to us, looking from within our reality, that it would contradict reason. But reason itself would suggest it would have to be greater than reality, or it would not be reasonable.

When we worship God we worship a Being our life experience does not give us the tools with which to understand. If we could, God would not inspire awe…I only say this to illustrate that we, as Christians, believe things we cannot explain. And so does everybody else.” -Donald Miller, Blue Like Jazz
